June Monthly Message from the FDIC
June is National Homeownership Month! During June, we celebrate the value that owning a home brings to families, communities, and neighborhoods across America. Owning a home is one of the biggest purchases you will ever make, and the process of shopping for a home and obtaining a mortgage can be overwhelming. However, there are steps to take to make the process more manageable and the purchase more attainable. If you are thinking about purchasing your first home, check out the FDIC Resource webpage.
If you would like to learn more about buying a home and other resources, check out the FDIC How Money Smart Are you? game. Everyday financial topics and information are delivered through a suite of 14 games and related resources. This game will help you get ready to own a home and finance the purchase.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is recognized on June 15th as a day to promote preventing the abuse and neglect of elders. One of the most prevalent types of elder abuse is financial exploitation. Our Money Smart for Older Adults curriculum raises awareness among older adults and their caregivers on how to prevent elder financial exploitation and encourages informed financial decision-making. It was created in collaboration with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Money Smart for Older Adults Webpage Redesign
The Money Smart for Older Adults webpage has been redesigned. You can now search for materials by topic (e.g. Romance Scams). You can also download the individual materials by topic instead of downloading the entire curriculum. Visit the site and check out the changes here.
Next Money Smart for Small Business Train the Trainer Webinar
The FDIC will host a Train the Trainer webinar on June 22, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern Time, directed to organizations, financial institutions, and individuals interested in teaching our free financial education program Money Smart for Small Business. Prospective instructors will learn how to use this curriculum effectively to help small business owners in their community improve their financial skills and create positive banking relationships. Latest FDIC Consumer News Edition
The June 2023 edition of the FDIC Consumer News is titled, “Understanding Appraisals and Why They Matter,” and it provides tips to help you through the home loan and financing process. Information is shared about the valuation a lender uses from the appraisal to determine whether you will be approved for a new purchase, refinance, or home equity loan.
