September Monthly Message from the FDIC

September brings the first day of fall. It also brings observances that provide opportunities to use Money Smart materials.

For example, National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans. It runs between September 15 and October 15. In addition to English materials, several products in the Money Smart product family are available in Spanish. These include the Money Smart Parent/Caregiver Guides, Money Smart Podcasts, Money Smart for Older Adults, and Money Smart for Small Business.

Also, National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness about preparing for disasters and emergencies. The 2021 theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.” A relevant module in Money Smart for Adults is Disasters: Financial Preparation and Recovery to help participants learn how to financially prepare for, and recover from, disasters.

New Housing Resources

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has developed a new page to provide homeowners and renters helpful resources, including information to understand their rights and protections. Visit www.consumerfinance.gov/housing, the federal government’s one-stop, go-to resource for up-to-date information on relief options, protections, and key deadlines. A key feature of this page is the CFPB Rental Assistance Finder (consumerfinance.gov), a new tool that allows anyone to search for emergency rental assistance programs in their area. Financial educators can use this toolkit (consumerfinance.gov) to share the rental assistance resources with their networks.
