Credit reporting agencies should be held financially liable for reporting
errors. For
example, before a collection account could be attached to someone's perfecft
credit report, the agency must contact the person and make them aware. Case
in
point, someone got my social security number and opened utility accounts in
my
name in another city. I was never contacted by the credit agency nor the
collection companies, as my name was not the same as the person who opened
the accounts. I finally had to file ID Theft and go through the long process
of
clearing up THEIR mistake! Not to mention the cost involved with notarizing
numerous documents, overnight shipping costs, and my time! To add insult to
injury, I got a letter from Equifax stating that two (2) of the collection
accounts
were deemed to be mine and they would not be removed! Again, I had to prove
to
them that they were not my accounts and it took getting letters from the
collection
agencies and creditor to clear up the matter! The credit bureaus should be
held
financially accountable for their errors and then they would be more
inclined to
act in the consumers best interest. They should have to carry Errors and
Omissions insurance and pay consumers when they make a mistake! If we make
a mistake on our taxes, we must pay a for that mistake.
Credit reporting agencies must be held accountable for their accuracy and
the
burdern of proof should rest on their shoulders to provide accurate
information!
