The annual Summary of Deposits (SOD) survey and instructions for the period ending June 30, 2003, will be mailed the week of July 7th to institutions with more than a main office facility. Unit banks - banks that do not have any branches - do not participate in this survey .

Financial institutions will again have the option to file their SOD survey electronically rather than filing by returning the hard-copy form. Electronic Data Systems (EDS) serves as the collection agent for the SOD survey. For your bank to file its SOD survey electronically, you must use computer software that has been certified by EDS. Certified software is available through certain vendors that have completed a certification process. Alternatively, your bank may develop its own SOD software, but you must complete the certification process.

EDS has certified for electronic submission software products marketed by DBI Financial Systems, Inc. (800-774-3279), InterCept Group (800-825-3772), and Sheshunoff Information Services, Inc. (800-456-2340). The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has provided these software companies with a significant number of edits used in validating SOD survey information.

Financial institutions will have the additional option this year of filing the SOD survey via the Internet. This option is targeted to those who mailed a hard-copy of the 2002 SOD survey. Instructions for use of the Internet filing alternative will be provided with the 2003 SOD survey and related instructions. The Internet option includes the ability to revise branch structure information, editing capability, and a more reliable filing method.

The filing deadline for submitting the hard-copy form is July 30, 2003; for Internet and electronic filing, the deadline is August 15, 2003.

If your institution established a branch, was involved in a merger or purchase/sale, or closed a branch location prior to July 1 that is not reflected on the survey form that you receive, please e-mail ( sod@fdic.gov ) or fax (202-898-8614/6952) the following information to the FDIC: institution name; certificate number; name of branch; complete street address, city, state, county name or county equivalent name (such as an independent city) and zip code; and the date established. If a branch has been acquired from or sold to another institution, please include the name, city and state of the other institution and the effective date of the transaction. If a branch has been closed, please note the branch and the date closed. The FDIC will ensure that the transaction is processed immediately and will send an updated SOD survey form in July. The software vendors will also send revised software packages to applicable institutions after July 19, if requested.

You can review the current branch information for your institution at the FDIC's Internet site ( www 5 .fdic.gov/idasp ). To review a list of your branch offices at this site, select "Find All Institutions," enter the bank's certificate number, press "Find," and when the bank name appears, select "Current List of Offices" at the bottom of the screen. The list of branches will be presented in state and county order. If the branch information for your institution is not correct, please e-mail ( sod@fdic.gov ) the information described in the previous paragraph. Providing updated information regarding branch structure changes prior to the creation of the SOD survey form will expedite your completing the survey.

All data collected from the SOD survey are available to the public. SOD survey data are available on the FDIC's Internet site ( www 5 .fdic.gov/sod ).
