Guest Speaker Biography - Phil Martin

Phil Martin is Assistant for Financial Education and Student Aid, Office of the Secretary, at the U.S. Department of Education.  Phil joined the U.S. Department of Education in October, 2009, as a member of the Obama Administration.  He is primarily tasked with developing the department’s strategy for personal finance education.  Phil is the Education Department’s representative to the Treasury-led Financial Literacy and Education Commission and the President’s Advisory Council for Financial Capability.    

Phil is also working in the under secretary’s office on issues of college access and affordability to help advance progress toward President Obama’s 2020 goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.

Before arriving at the Department of Education, Phil held a variety of positions focused on civic education and participation, including at the Corporation for National and Community Service and Princeton University.  He has been an interfaith community organizer in New Jersey, a field organizer for the Obama/Biden Presidential Campaign North Carolina and Ohio, and an AmeriCorps Member and Leader.

Phil holds a B.A. in economics from Rutgers University.
