How about making information sharing an "opt-in" practice? Not enough is being done about this, and I for one do not wish to mail my SSN to every company that needs it for me to opt-out. This is not a safe practice, and there is plenty of proof out there that it's not safe to mail anything containing your SSN due to the ease of identity theft. My personal information should not be used for profit in any way without my permission, and the fact that most privacy notices recognize a non-response as permission to share my private information is ridiculous. Even if there are laws against information sharing, it's already out there (my private information) because I refuse to mail in my SSN and some legally-worded document. I don't believe enough is being done to enforce the laws as they stand right now, because I can't even get a company to send me a confirmation on paper that states what their records show as my choice for information sharing. I don't think they do anything about it if you choose to opt-out, because even if you opt-out they can still share your information with "affiliates". It's very frustrating that these greedy companies need to sell my private information, and there aren't many alternatives available. The privacy notices I've received are NOT clearly stated or even easy to locate. They sure send me new credit card notices labeled "URGENT" but the privacy notices are tossed in with the rest of their junk ads they send with the monthly statements. Please support an "opt-in" approach, meaning they cannot share any private information without my written consent.
