The first line shows initial unemployment claims from 1989 to 1993.Unemployment claims were just under 300,000 in 1989, peaked near 500,000 in 1991, and dropped down to 325,000 in 1993. The second line shows initial unemployment claims from 2000 to 2004. Unemployment claims started at approximately 275,000 in 2000, peaked near 500,000 in 2001, and dropped down to about 300,000 at the end of 2004.
