The FDIC hosted a one-day conference on "The Future of Community Banking" on February 16, 2012, from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. EST. The conference provided a forum for community bank stakeholders to explore the unique role community banks play in the country's economy and the challenges and opportunities this segment of the banking industry faces. This conference is the first in a series of community banking initiatives that the FDIC is undertaking this year. The purpose of these initiatives is to further FDIC's dialogue with the industry and deepen its understanding of the evolving challenges and opportunities for community banks.

The conference featured remarks by Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Shelley Moore Capito, United States Congresswoman for West Virginia's 2nd District, Thomas J. Curry, Director, FDIC, and Martin J. Gruenberg, Acting Chairman, FDIC. Conference panels examined:

  • The evolution and characteristics of community banks,
  • Current challenges and opportunities for community banks,
  • The perspectives of community bank customers, and
  • Lessons learned and successful strategies for the community bank of the future.
