Outstanding volume of debt securities by class in billions of dollars is compared between 1985 and 2003. From 1985 to 2003, asset-backed securities grew from just under $1 billion to $1.7 trillion. Over the same period, outstanding municipal securities rose steadily from $860 billion to $1.9 trillion. U.S. agency debt grew from $294 billion to $2.6 trillion. Mortgage-related securities grew most notably, increasing from $372 billion to a whopping $5.1 trillion. U.S. Treasury debt fluctuated more significantly over time. Starting at $1.4 billion in 1985, U.S. Treasury securities grew until 1996 and peaked at 3.5 trillion before dropping to $3 trillion in 2000. They then began to grow steadily and totaled $3.5 trillion in 2003.
