The net interest income for community banks, large and midsized banks, and megabanks was compared over the past 13 years. On average, net interest income as a share of total revenue for megabanks has fallen from 86% in 1990 to 65% in 2003. Community banks still rely heavily on net interest income. Net interest income as a share of total revenue has fallen slightly from roughly 94% in 1984 to 89% in 2003. Large and midsized banks are similar; their net interest income as a share of total revenue has fallen from 88% to 80%.
