In 2002, moderate to severe drought conditions were found in South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska, with “extreme” drought conditions largely confined to western Nebraska and Kansas. By February 2003, the entire region was experiencing at least moderate to severe drought; “extreme” drought conditions covered two-thirds of Nebraska and had spread eastward into Iowa and Missouri.
